The Ontario Building Code Act requires that all property owners obtain a building permit for all new construction, additions of more than 10 m2 (108 ft2), demolitions and alterations of any structure. Permits are not required for roofing, shingling or eaves troughs. Building inspectors conduct inspections to ensure that all structures meet the building code's minimum standards for fire and structural safety.
