Marriage Licenses

Couples planning to get married in Ontario can obtain a Marriage License at the Township office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).

At this time, services related to Marriage Licenses are by appointment only.

Marriage License Application

One or both of the applicants must be present to apply for a Marriage License. If only one applicant is present, they must provide an application form signed by both applicants.

You can obtain a Marriage License Application form at the Township office or online.

Requirements Respecting Marriage in Ontario.

Required Identification

Valid and original identification must be provided by both applicants (no photocopies will be accepted). If only one applicant is present to apply for the Marriage License, they must still provide the required identification for the other applicant.

The first piece of identification must be either:

A Birth Certificate; or
A current passport.

The second piece of identification may include:

A Birth Certificate;
A current passport;
A driver's license;
A Record of Immigrant Landing;
A Canadian citizenship card;
An Ontario photo card;
A Native Status card;
A Permanent Residency card; or
A Nexus card.

Marriage After Divorce

If you were previously married and the divorce was completed in Canada, you must provide the original or Court certified copy of the:

Certificate of Divorce; or

Decree Absolute.

A Judgment or Court Order is not an acceptable proof of divorce. Photocopies will not be accepted.

Divorce Outside of Canada

If you were divorced outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization from the Office of the Registrar General before a Marriage License can be issued. This process may take up to four weeks.

Widow or Widower

If an applicant is a widow or widower, they are not required to produce a Death Certificate.

Age Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to apply for a Marriage License.

Applicants who are 16 or 17 years of age must have parental consent and must present a signed Consent of Parent or Guardian to Marriage.

License Fee

The fee for a Marriage License is $100.00 for residents of Warwick Township and $115.00 for non-residents. The fee is payable by cash, cheque, or debit.

Waiting Period

A Marriage License is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
